The Sunday Night Football matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions ended in chaos, thanks to a massive postgame fight.
A heated duel between two contenders
In Week 6, the Detroit Lions (4–1) visited the Kansas City Chiefs (2–3) in a critical showdown. Hampered by injuries in their secondary, Detroit struggled to contain Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense, which controlled much of the contest. Though the game was fairly clean in terms of penalties—Detroit had four, Kansas City had none—the situation deteriorated after the final whistle.
What happened with JuJu Smith-Schuster?
As Mahomes knelt to end the game and extended his hand to Lions safety Brian Branch, Branch brushed past without reciprocating. JuJu Smith-Schuster approached Branch, and after some exchanged words, Branch slapped Smith-Schuster’s helmet with an open hand. That strike sent Smith-Schuster to the ground, and in an instant, both teams flooded onto the field. Despite the presence of officials, the melee was not immediately quelled.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid later said Branch struck Smith-Schuster “for what looked like no reason,” noting that Smith-Schuster suffered a bloody nose in the altercation.
Apologies and reactions
At his press conference, Lions coach Dan Campbell apologized on behalf of Branch:
“I love Brian Branch, but what he did is inexcusable. This is not how we do things in Detroit.” NBC Sports
Branch himself admitted regret in the locker room:
“I did a real childish thing,” he said. He added that frustration had built from perceived unpunished infractions: “I’m tired of people doing stuff between plays and the refs don’t catch it.”
Branch claimed that earlier in the game, Smith-Schuster had illegally blocked him in the back—“in front of the ref,” he said—and that he felt vulnerable on that play. But he acknowledged there was no excuse for his action.
Smith-Schuster, meanwhile, expressed his disappointment:
“After the game I expected to shake his hand and say ‘Good game,’ but he threw a punch,” he said. “I play between the whistles… I know he’s better than that.” NBC Sports
The game before the fight
Before the postgame chaos, Kansas City controlled the game. Mahomes finished with 257 passing yards and 3 touchdowns, adding 32 yards and a rushing TD. Travis Kelce led receivers with 6 catches for 78 yards, while Isiah Pacheco added 51 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Detroit’s defense never got untracked, weakened by injury and unable to stifle Kansas City’s momentum. Offensively, the Lions showed flashes, but Kansas City made key stops that prevented Detroit from mounting a comeback. The Lions were held to 17 points.
Possible consequences
Given Branch’s prior history—with multiple fines earlier this season—league discipline is expected.
