SpaceX Starship Megarocket Launch : “This Flight Could Save (or Doom) Humanity’s Space Future”

SpaceX’s Starship rocket successfully completed its eleventh test flight on Monday, October 13, marking another step forward in Elon Musk’s ambition to make space travel reusable and interplanetary.

The massive rocket, over 120 meters tall — roughly the height of a forty-story building — lifted off under a thick plume of smoke from SpaceX’s base in Boca Chica, Texas. After the two stages separated in flight, SpaceX successfully executed several tests and maneuvers on both the booster and the spacecraft before they ended their flight in the ocean, as planned, to the applause of engineers watching on large screens.

This controlled eleventh test flight, following a previous success in August, represents a rebound for the company after a difficult start to 2025, when several test flights ended in explosions.

However, this new triumph does not erase growing concerns about the overall progress of the rocket, which is intended to carry out its first missions to Mars in 2026 and to support NASA’s plans for the return of American astronauts to the Moon in 2027.

According to a recent analysis by an independent panel of experts, the modified version of Starship designed to serve as a lunar lander could be “years behind schedule”, potentially delaying NASA’s Artemis program. This delay could open the door for China, which is also aiming to send astronauts to the Moon by 2030.

In this tense climate of international competition, former NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine warned before a Senate committee in September:

“In its current state, it is very unlikely that we will land on the Moon before China,”

urging Washington to prepare an alternative plan.

Despite these criticisms, Elon Musk remains confident. Known for his boundless optimism, he acknowledged that there are still “thousands of technical challenges” to overcome but insists the company is making steady progress.

Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, is central to SpaceX’s long-term vision. Designed for interplanetary travel, it is expected to demonstrate unprecedented technical feats such as mid-flight refueling and the controlled recovery of spacecraft after reentry.

The successful completion of this eleventh test flight reinforces SpaceX’s position as the world’s leading private space company and strengthens its role in NASA’s upcoming missions to the Moon and, eventually, Mars.
