The Canadian teenager Jérémy Gohier is hard to miss. At just 14 years old, he already measures 2.29 meters (7 ft 6 in) — only two centimeters shorter than the NBA’s all-time tallest players, Manute Bol and Gheorghe Mureșan, who each stood at 2.31 m. Unsurprisingly, basketball is his sport of choice.
He’s taller than Victor Wembanyama (2.24 m) and every current NBA player. And he might one day become the tallest player in basketball history. He still has time — and he’s still growing. In the last year alone, Gohier has shot up by 11 centimeters (over four inches).
From 3’11 at age 2 to 5’7 at 9
All eyes are constantly on him, something he’s had to learn to live with — though sometimes he wishes he could blend in. “Whenever I go somewhere, everyone stares at me. I wish I were 5’11. Sometimes I wish I could disappear, but I prefer being as tall as I am and playing basketball,” he says.

Gohier looks up (figuratively) to NBA superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokić. Like them, he’s already competing internationally: last summer, he took part in the AmeriCup U16, playing against opponents two years older than him. Representing Canada, his team reached the final — though he didn’t score in that game — before losing heavily to the United States. Across the tournament, he averaged 2.5 points (46.7% shooting), 4.3 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, and 0.2 assists in 10.6 minutes per game.
His coach praises his strong work ethic and competitiveness, noting that against players his own age, Gohier is virtually unstoppable.

A Family of Tall Genes
Despite his exceptional height, Gohier doesn’t come from extraordinarily tall parents — his father is 1.83 m (6 ft) and his mother 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in). Still, there are tall figures in the family: a grandfather who was 1.96 m (6 ft 5 in) and another relative who reached 2.10 m (6 ft 11 in). These family traits helped doctors rule out gigantism after several medical assessments.
His mother recalls that at age two, he was already 1.20 m (3 ft 11 in). By age nine, he had reached 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in). “His teacher once told us he played on his knees to keep up with his classmates,” she says with a smile.
A Future Towering Duo for Canada?
Looking ahead, Gohier could one day form a formidable interior pairing for Team Canada alongside Olivier Rioux, the 19-year-old 2.35 m (7 ft 8 in) center currently playing college basketball with the Florida Gators in the NCAA.
For now, Gohier continues to grow — in every sense. He might wish he were shorter sometimes, but with size, talent, and determination on his side, his future in basketball looks as tall as he is.
