Father Faces Trial After Shocking Attempt to Abandon 6-Year-Old Son in Forest—“Nothing Could Excuse This”

Show summary Hide summary
This is the kind of chilling story that makes you wonder how anyone could justify such actions—or even begin to call it ‘parenting.’ In late October, a shocking attempt by a father to leave his six-year-old son alone in a forest near Liverdun, in north-eastern France, ended with the boy seriously injured and a whole community in disbelief.

A Punishment That Went Far Too Far

Angered by what he described as his son’s bad behavior, a 44-year-old father from Frouard (a town in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region, close to the French-German border) made a decision on the night of October 31st that would stun both medical professionals and the wider public. As reported by L’Est Républicain, he drove his six-year-old deep into the woods near Liverdun. There, seeking to ‘teach him a lesson’, he left his child at the mercy of the forest—at night, no less. Not exactly a reward for misbehaving at day camp.

Panic took over the little boy when he realized what was happening. In a desperate move to avoid being abandoned, the child clung to his father’s car as it pulled away. Instead of stopping, the man kept driving—dragging his son for several meters (about thirty feet) before ending the ordeal. He finally took the injured child to Nancy hospital the same day, where medical staff were immediately suspicious.

Hospital Staff Raise the Alarm

Here’s where things get murky. When they arrived at the hospital, this resident of Frouard tried to explain that his son’s significant injuries—including a head trauma, wounds to his face and hands, and clear signs of shock—were the result of a simple accident. But for the hospital team, the story just didn’t add up. Experience tells you when something is ‘off’, and medical professionals are rarely easily fooled. Suspecting abuse, they quickly contacted law enforcement, and the father was placed in police custody.

The Child Tells His Story

During their investigation, police interviewed the little boy—who bravely confirmed their suspicions of mistreatment. What he described sent chills down the investigators’ spines and was a world away from his father’s version of events.

All day on October 31, the child had apparently been unruly at his day camp. Frustrated, the father decided to go far beyond a scolding: he would abandon his son alone in the Liverdun forest for the night. Once they arrived, he told his boy to get out of the car before driving away. Panicking at the prospect of being left alone, the child grabbed hold of the vehicle. The father, undeterred, is believed to have dragged him some ten meters (over thirty feet), before bringing him to hospital—yet another supposed act of ‘parental concern’.

Conflicting Accounts and Legal Consequences

Faced with his son’s statements, the suspect stuck to his story, insisting that the injuries were caused by an accident in the woods. He elaborated by telling investigators that his car broke down, and he simply asked his son to step outside to help him maneuver it. That’s apparently when the child was injured. But neither hospital staff, police, nor the Nancy public prosecutor found this version convincing.

The 44-year-old has now been charged with “intentional violence by ascendant against a minor under 15 years old leading to total work incapacity for more than eight days,” and is due to stand trial in March 2025. If found guilty, he faces up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (approximately $81,000). Released from police custody but placed under judicial supervision, he is strictly forbidden from contacting his son before the trial.
