Game-Changing Tires Will Soon Adapt to Weather—No More Chains or Winter Tires Needed?

Tired of fiddling with snow chains every winter or switching your tires twice a year? Well, you might soon be able to say goodbye to the hassle—thanks to a new generation of intelligent tires about to shake up the roads.

Seasonal Obligations: Tires and the Law

Starting this Saturday, November 1, drivers in certain mountainous regions (think the French Alps and Pyrenees) will need to pay extra attention to their tires. That’s when the “Loi Montagne”—France’s “Mountain Law”—makes its grand comeback. For the next four months, every vehicle travelling through the 34 affected departments will be required by law to have either snow tires, chains, or those ever-mysterious tire socks onboard.

  • This rule covers every four-wheel vehicle and above: passenger cars, vans, RVs, coaches, buses and even big rigs, according to France’s official Service-Public website.

The good news? The biannual routine—swapping to snow tires each November and then shedding them every April—might soon be just a fading memory for drivers everywhere.

Here Comes the Tire Revolution

As revealed by journalist Anicet Mbida on the French morning show “Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1”, a tire revolution is on the way that could make life much easier for drivers. Say goodbye to socks, chains, and swapping between snow, rain, autumn, summer, or winter tires every few months.

“The tire is undergoing a revolution. No more tire socks, no more chains, and no more winter, rain, fall or summer tires! Tomorrow, we’ll have tires that can actually change shape to guarantee the best possible grip,”

explains the reporter, clarifying that these tires will soon analyze road conditions and morph on the fly to deliver maximum traction based on weather.

“Tires can switch to rain mode. So, they’ll narrow the width to prevent aquaplaning. In short, these are variable geometry tires—tires that can actually widen or shrink,”

continues the expert.

Shape-Shifting Tires That Think For Themselves

If a tire can shrink in the rain, it can also adapt to snowy roads. How? By extending tiny retractable studs to help it grip slippery surfaces more effectively.

“When you’re driving on black ice, the studs pop out to better grip the road, so you can keep moving. And then, when grip is back to normal, the studs tuck themselves away,”

explains Anicet Mbida. It almost sounds like science fiction—except that it’s about to become reality. Or, at least, it will be… someday.

Not Quite There Yet…

Unfortunately, these game-changing tires are not available just yet. There’s no word on their official release date—or the price tag, either. For now, drivers will have to stay patient and keep those tire socks and chains handy—however devilish they may be to put on in a winter storm.
